NCBC February meeting
Presenter: Steve Lund
Enhancing Visibility for Cyclists

February 13, 2017
6-8:30 pm

Place: Tyler's Taproom
1483 Beaver Creek Commons Drive
Apex, NC 27502
Google map

"Being Seen" can literally save your life! This is, of course, critical for riding at night but it can also make a huge difference during the day, especially this time of year when the sun angle is low and the shadows are long. Sadly, a recent cycling tragedy in our area may have resulted - at least partly - from lack of visibility.

Would you bet your life on your blinkie? Many cyclists will slap on a blinkie and think they’re good to go. Unfortunately, this is rarely the case and leads to a dangerous false sense of security. There is much more that can and should be done to enhance your visibility while riding.

Come hear how Steve Lund tackled this challenge before he started commuting to work. Bring your own blinkies and front lights to the meeting for some comparisons and discussion. If the weather is cooperative, we will adjourn to the parking lot to do some "real world" testing. Steve will be bringing his bike to demo. You are welcome to bring yours to test under the same conditions.

As a special safety feature, we will be giving away *FREE* Take-A-Look mirrors at the meeting while supplies last. Make 2017 a safe cycling New Year!

We meet at 6:00 to eat, and the meeting will start around 7:00. NCBC meetings are open to the public.

With feature sets for fitness training plus feature sets for outdoor navigation, fēnix 3 is ready for any training activity and competition. Access to the Connect IQ platform allows customization of watch faces, data fields, widgets and activities. And, fēnix 3 is a thin, light multi-sport training GPS that won’t slow you down whether for training or every day use. Smart Notification lets you receive emails, texts and alerts right on your watch, even if you're on the trail, fēnix 3 receives the wireless signal from your iPhone® 4s or later, let’s you know you have a message, and displays the full text on its own screen whenever you’re ready to read it.

Doug Kline will describe the Cycliq Fly6 HD Camera and Rear Bike Light that, as its name suggests, is both a rear flashinjg light and a high-def rear-facing video camera.

David Cole, NCBC President, will give an overview of the RideWithGPS route planning software and associated smartphone app.  NCBC recently purchased a club membership, making the premium features of RideWithGPS available to club members at no additional cost.

Todd Hunter of Wenzel Coaching/Todd Hunter Bike Fitting, will be available after the meeting to answer any questions you may have regarding bicycle fitting.  If you have hand, foot or neck pain, feel you are not putting out the power you should, can’t spin a high cadence smoothly or just feel like you are wasting energy, a few millimeters of adjustment can make a big difference.  Talk to Todd and see if a bike fit may improve your ride.

If you've been paying any attention at all, you know that the NC DOT has provided recommendations to the NC legislature under the guise of bicycle safety that may restrict your rights as a cyclist and actually make cycling less safe. You also probably know of the accident in Johnston County in February where four cyclists were run over from behind by a motorist and seriously injured.

For our April meeting, Lisa Riegel, the executive director of BikeWalkNC, will speak to us on these topics. She will discuss BikeWalkNC's advocacy for making our state's roads safe for all users, and she'll discuss our role as cyclists. This is a *very* important meeting and one that you'll want to attend. Don't leave your safety up to others. Come learn what you need to do make cycling safe and enjoyable for us all.

As usual, we'll meet at 6:00 to eat, and the meeting will start around 7:00. NCBC meetings are open to the public; you do not need to be a member to attend.

A true bicycle friendly community includes a culture where biking is promoted at all levels. It isn’t the work of one entity, but requires constant collaboration between City departments, elected officials, local businesses, advocacy organizations, and residents. Jennifer Baldwin, the Bicycle & Pedestrian Coordinator for Raleigh, will provide an overall assessment of Raleigh’s progress towards becoming a bicycle-friendly community. Specifically, there will be an opportunity to provide feedback about issues from bicycle facility design, to education programs and everything in between.

This topic is pertinent no matter where you live. If you'd like to see cycling encouraged in your community, come join us at the Tyler's Taproom in Raleigh and join the discussion. We meet at 6:00 to eat, and the meeting will start around 7:00.

January 12, 2015
6-8:30 pm

Place: Tyler's Taproom
1483 Beaver Creek Commons Drive
Apex, NC 27502
Google map

Many cyclists will willingly pay thousands of dollars for a super-light carbon frame and light weight wheels, but how many pay attention to their own weight? Did you know that for each pound over your target weight, you'll add 15-20 seconds per mile of climbing? And did you know that what you eat can be even more important than how much you eat?

For our January meeting, David Cole will present how you can identify and reach your target weight with a combination of diet awareness, cardio workouts (cycling), and core strength training. No, you do not need to join a gym, and you do not need to starve yourself.

David's credentials on the topic? In 2011 he rode the Blood Sweat and Gears mountain century and finished the 102 miles in 8:04. In 2012, after loosing 15 pounds, he finished the same ride in 6:24, 98 minutes faster! David will draw from a variety of sources, including Bicycling Magazine, RoadBikeRider.com, and his own personal experience, to share insights that can help you achieve your target weight and cycling goals, too!

Get your New Year off to a good start and come join us. We'll meet to eat at 6:00, and the club meeting will start at around 7 pm.
